POS (Point of Sale)
The system that processes payments and rings up sales at a pet-care business — handling services, retail products, packages, tips, and taxes, and tying each transaction to the client and pet record.
A point of sale (POS) is where a pet-care business rings up and collects payment. In this industry the POS handles more than a single service charge: it processes boarding stays and add-ons, grooming tickets, daycare days drawn from packages, retail sales of food and supplies, memberships, tips, and applicable taxes — then takes payment by card, saved card on file, or other methods.
Because pet-care POS is usually built into the booking platform rather than a standalone register, each transaction links back to the client and pet record. That means check-out can total a visit automatically from the run assignment, length of stay, and add-ons, and the sale becomes part of the pet's history. It also enables card-on-file charging for no-show fees, deposits, and recurring memberships.
A capable POS supports partial payments and deposits, split payments, refunds, discounts and promo codes, gift cards, and gratuity handling for groomers and walkers. On the back end it feeds reporting — daily sales, revenue by service, tips owed to staff — and often integrates with accounting software so bookkeeping isn't a manual re-entry.
For a small business the POS is also where payment-processing fees live, so operators pay attention to the rates and whether they can bring their own processor or must use the platform's built-in payments.
